Families cross between receding waters as mountains rise and fresh water pours from rock

Psalm 114

JPS TaNaKH 1917
Chapter overview
Psalm 114 compresses Exodus and entry into the land into a vivid creation response. Sea and Jordan withdraw, mountains leap, and stone becomes water before the presence that transforms enslaved people into a sanctuary.

About Psalms: book summary and outline →

1When Israel came forth out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of strange language;
2Judah became His sanctuary, Israel His dominion.
3The sea saw it, and fled; the Jordan turned backward.
4The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like young sheep.
5What aileth thee, O thou sea, that thou fleest? thou Jordan, that thou turnest backward?
6Ye mountains, that ye skip like rams; ye hills, like young sheep?
7Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob;
8Who turned the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a fountain of waters.
