Haggai calls Judah’s leaders and people to rebuild the Lord’s house instead of leaving it in ruins while attending to their own homes. The community responds and resumes work. Further messages encourage those discouraged by the temple’s appearance, address holiness and failed harvests, and promise blessing and a chosen role for Zerubbabel.
In Christian Bibles, Haggai is one of the twelve Minor Prophets of the Old Testament. In the Jewish Tanakh it belongs to the Nevi’im, the Prophets, as part of the Twelve. See it on the shelf.
Haggai 1: failed harvests expose misplaced priorities, and the returned exiles respond by rebuilding the neglected temple.
Haggai 2: the temple builders receive courage, promised glory and peace, renewed harvest blessing, and assurance for Zerubbabel.
