Ruth tells of a Moabite widow who remains with her mother-in-law Naomi after their family suffers bereavement. Returning together to Bethlehem, they find food and support through Ruth’s work in the fields of Boaz. A family redemption arrangement leads to Ruth’s marriage to Boaz and the birth of Obed, whose descendants include David.
In Christian Bibles, Ruth is one of the Historical Books of the Old Testament. In the Jewish Tanakh it belongs to the Ketuvim, the Writings. See it on the shelf.
Ruth 1 follows Naomi’s grief and return to Bethlehem, where Ruth’s steadfast loyalty opens a path toward hope.
Ruth 2 shows Ruth gleaning in Boaz’s field, where humble work meets generous protection and providential kindness.
Ruth 3 recounts Ruth’s courageous appeal at the threshing floor and Boaz’s honorable promise to pursue redemption.
Ruth 4 completes Boaz’s public redemption and celebrates Obed’s birth, Naomi’s restoration, and the family line of David.
