Questions God Asks
Every question God asks in the Bible, from "Where are you?" to "Will a man rob God?", and who each was asked of.

Jesus asks a question in more than one of every eight verses in which he speaks. This page gathers the questions attributed to him in the New Testament of the Berean Standard Bible, who he addresses, and which questions the Gospels tell more than once.

The counts remain based on the Berean Standard Bible. The switcher changes the displayed verses, not the analysis; when an edition lacks a book or verse, the BSB text remains visible.

Jesus asks 310 questions in the New Testament, in 265 verses. Many are told in more than one Gospel: “Who do you say I am?” is in Matthew, Mark and Luke. Counted once each, there are 225 distinct questions. A figure often quoted, 307, comes from Martin Copenhaver's book Jesus Is the Question3, which also counts every occurrence; counts differ with how a question asked in two sentences, or a quotation of Scripture, is handled.
In the Gospel narrative, his earliest recorded question is to Mary and Joseph, when they find him at twelve in the temple: “Why were you looking for Me?” (Luke 2:49). The last in Bible order is to Saul on the road to Damascus: “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?” (Acts 9:4), which Paul retells twice.

His disciples are asked the most: 88 distinct questions, many of them about understanding (“Do you still not understand?”) and about faith (“Why are you so afraid?”). The crowds and his public audiences are asked 67, the religious leaders 50, often in debate and often with a question in answer to theirs, and the people he met one by one 37. He asks God one question, from the cross. A question put to different hearers in different Gospels counts under each, so the four figures add to more than 225.
The questions to individuals are some of the most personal in the Gospels. Of the disciples, Peter is asked the most, and three of his questions are the same one, asked three times by the lake. Each distinct question appears once below, at its first telling.

The questions on this page are counted in the Berean Standard Bible. Early Greek manuscripts have no question marks, so where Jesus asks and where he states is partly a translator’s reading. The same verses were read in five more translations in the public domain: the King James Version, the World English Bible, Young’s Literal Translation, the Bible in Basic English and, in Spanish, the Reina-Valera 1909.
Of the 265 verses where Jesus asks a question in the Berean Standard Bible, the other five translations put a question mark in between 90.9% and 96.6% of those they number the same way: the fewest in Young’s Literal Translation, the most in the Bible in Basic English. In the 1,903 verses where only Jesus speaks, the six translations carry between 15.2 and 15.8 question marks in every 100 verses, and the BSB 15.5. The King James Version has more than the BSB. By that measure, a count made in another of these translations would come out within about 2% of this page's, higher or lower.
| Translation | Verses compared | With a question mark | Share | Question marks | Question marks per 100 verses where only Jesus speaks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Berean Standard Bible | 265 | 265 | 100.0% | 317 | 15.5 |
| King James Version | 265 | 253 | 95.5% | 304 | 15.8 |
| World English Bible | 265 | 255 | 96.2% | 307 | 15.4 |
| Young’s Literal Translation | 265 | 241 | 90.9% | 294 | 15.2 |
| Bible in Basic English | 265 | 256 | 96.6% | 301 | 15.2 |
| Reina-Valera 1909 | 265 | 253 | 95.5% | 299 | 15.3 |
The share of verses with a question mark can only fall: these are the verses where the Berean Standard Bible has a question, so a verse where another translation asks and this one does not is not among them. The question marks in them can rise, where a translation divides one question into two. The verses where only Jesus speaks are chosen from Faith Comes By Hearing’s speaker data, not from any translation, so that measure can move either way, and it is the fairer guide. Even where another translation counts about as many questions, they are not all the same ones.
Who is speaking. Faith Comes By Hearing's verse-by-verse speaker assignments for dramatized audio Bibles, published with SIL's Glyssen project under the MIT licence1, mark the verses in which Jesus speaks: 2,140 of them: 2,003 in the New Testament where the list is sure of the speaker, 127 more where it is unsure, and 10 in the Old Testament. The same method and rules as Questions God asks find every question in the Berean Standard Bible2 in those verses, 362 candidates, following the quotation marks across each chapter.
Deciding. Stated rules settle most candidates. The rest were read and decided by hand, 87 in all, each with its reason: a second speaker in the same verse, a question sent through messengers (“Where is My guest room?”), questions the BSB splits with narration, and the duplicate Aramaic cry.
Who was asked. The Gospels were read scene by scene, 133 scenes in all, and each was given the audience its narration names: “He questioned His disciples”, “Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John”. Where a scene has more than one audience, the question is assigned by hand. John's Gospel sometimes uses “the Jews” for particular authorities or opponents within its narrative. The phrase should not be generalized to Jewish people as a whole. This page places those passages under public audience unless the text specifically names Pharisees or priests.
Parallels. Where Matthew, Mark and Luke tell the same question in the same scene, or record the same saying, the tellings were grouped by hand, 64 groups in all. Wording can differ between Gospels: Matthew's “Why do you ask Me about what is good?” is grouped with Mark's and Luke's “Why do you call Me good?”. This page was made with AI assistance and human review.
The data. Every counted question, with its audience and parallels, and every question considered and not counted with the reason, is in jesus-questions.json.
Corrections are welcome through the contact page, especially about who a question was asked of or which tellings belong together.
310 in the New Testament, counting every telling, or 225 distinct questions once the same question in more than one Gospel is counted once. Martin Copenhaver's book Jesus Is the Question gives 307; counts differ with how parallels and questions asked in more than one sentence are counted.
The earliest in the Gospel narrative is "Why were you looking for Me?", asked of Mary and Joseph when they found him in the temple at twelve (Luke 2:49). In Bible order, the first is in the Sermon on the Mount: "But if the salt loses its savor, how can it be made salty again?" (Matthew 5:13).
His disciples: 88 distinct questions, against 67 to the crowds and his public audiences, 50 to religious leaders and 37 to people he met one by one. Of individuals, Peter is asked the most.
One, from the cross: "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" It is in Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34, first in Aramaic and then in translation, and it is the first line of Psalm 22.
"Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?", spoken to Saul on the road to Damascus in Acts 9:4. In the Gospels, the last is to Peter by the lake: "If I want him to remain until I return, what is that to you?" (John 21:22).
