Asked of God, and what came of it

What people in the Bible asked God for, and what the text says came of it: given as asked, given another way, not given, promised, or not told. And how long they waited, where the text says.

The short answer

197requests people make of God, from Genesis to Revelation
121outcomes the text itself ties to the asking
39requests whose outcome the text does not tell

People in the Bible ask God for a child, for rain, for their own lives and the lives of others, for guidance before a battle, and now and then to die. This page reads 197 of their requests, from Abraham's question about an heir (Genesis 15:2) to “Come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20), and sets beside each what the text says came of it.

The text ties the outcome to the asking in 121 of them: it says God heard, answered, granted or relented, or it gives His reply. In 36 more, what follows in the story is told without being called an answer. For 39, the text does not say what came of the request.

Of the requests whose outcome is told, most are given as asked: 129, and the text ties 95 of those to the asking. Seven are given another way, sixteen are not given, and five are promised or met with an instruction to wait. One, Jesus's prayer in Gethsemane, is shown in its own terms.

What came of it

Each request is placed in one of six outcomes, by what the text records next.

Given as asked
What was asked happens, or God answers the question put to Him.
Given another way
Something is given, but not what was asked. Paul asks three times to be rid of his thorn and hears, “My grace is sufficient for you” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Not given
God refuses or does not answer, or what was asked does not happen.
Promised, or told to wait
God's answer places the outcome in the future, and the text does not tell it.
Not told
The text does not say what came of it.
In its own terms
In Gethsemane Jesus asks that the cup pass and, in the same prayer, that the Father's will be done; the cup does not pass. The page shows it in its own terms.

An outcome is tied to the asking when the text says God heard, answered, listened, granted, relented, remembered or did as asked, when it gives His reply, or when His word links the two. Everything else is shown as following in the story, even when the text says God did what was asked, as when “the LORD delivered them into his hand” (Judges 11:32). In the books of the prophets, God's words that follow a prayer count as His reply only when the text presents them as said to the one praying.

Not given

The text records sixteen requests that were not given. In fourteen, God's answer or the text's own words show it: God refuses, tells Jeremiah to stop praying for the people, or answers with a question, and twice Saul gets no answer at all. Two it shows only by what follows: David's child dies, and an angel wakes Elijah, who had asked to die, and feeds him.

Elijah and Jonah each ask to die, and neither is taken; so does Moses, who is given elders to share his burden instead (Numbers 11:14–17). Three times God tells Jeremiah not to pray for the people (Jeremiah 7:16; 11:14; 14:11). These are particular moments in the story, and the page does not draw from them a rule about when a request is refused.

Given another way, or later

Given another way

Abraham pleads for Sodom, and the city falls, but Lot is brought out. Moses asks to see God's glory and is shown His goodness passing by, but not His face. The people ask for the snakes to be taken away, and God gives a remedy for those who are bitten.

Abraham asks that Sodom be spared for the sake of the righteous in it: Will You really sweep away the righteous with the wicked? … Will You really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous ones who are there? Genesis 18:23–24

Given another way The text ties it to the asking He brought Lot out of the catastrophe that destroyed the cities where he had lived Genesis 19:29

The people had asked him to intercede (21:7).

David asks that the plague fall on him and his family rather than the people: Please, let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house. 2 Samuel 24:17

Given another way The text ties it to the asking the plague upon Israel was halted 2 Samuel 24:25

The text: Then the LORD answered the prayers on behalf of the land 2 Samuel 24:25

The hand does not fall on David; the plague stops after he builds the altar, and the text says the LORD answered the prayers for the land.

The text has already said that the LORD relented and told the angel, “Enough! Withdraw your hand now!” (24:16). David builds an altar at the prophet Gad's word; Chronicles adds that God answered him “with fire from heaven” (1 Chronicles 21:26).

Job asks that God withdraw His hand, answer him, and show him his sin: Withdraw Your hand from me … Then call me, and I will answer, or let me speak, and You can reply. How many are my iniquities and sins? Reveal to me my transgression and sin. Job 13:21–23

Given another way The text ties it to the asking Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind Job 38:1

God answers Job from the whirlwind; the text does not have Him name a sin.

God speaks to him of His works in creation (chapters 38 to 41). Afterwards God says Job has spoken accurately about Him (42:7) and restores his prosperity (42:10).

Paul asks that his thorn in the flesh be taken away: Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 2 Corinthians 12:8

Given another way The text ties it to the asking My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness. 2 Corinthians 12:9

The thorn is not said to be removed; the Lord answers that His grace is sufficient.

Paul does not say what the thorn was; he calls it “a messenger of Satan, to torment me” (12:7).

Promised, or told to wait

Habakkuk asks how long he must call for help and is told of a vision that awaits its time: “Though it lingers, wait for it” (Habakkuk 2:3). The others are answered with promises whose keeping the text does not tell: twice to Jeremiah, once to Ezekiel, and in Gabriel's answer to Daniel.

Jeremiah asks to see God's vengeance on those plotting against him: let me see Your vengeance upon them, for to You I have committed my cause Jeremiah 11:20

Promised, or told to wait The text ties it to the asking I will punish them … I will bring disaster on the people of Anathoth in the year of their punishment Jeremiah 11:22–23

God answers with a promise to punish the people of Anathoth in the year of their punishment.

He asks again in 12:3, and God's reply there is a question: “If you have raced with men on foot and they have worn you out, how can you compete with horses?” (12:5).

Jeremiah asks to be remembered, avenged, and kept alive: remember me and attend to me. Avenge me against my persecutors. In Your patience, do not take me away. Jeremiah 15:15

Promised, or told to wait The text ties it to the asking I will deliver you from the hand of the wicked and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless. Jeremiah 15:21

God answers with a promise to deliver him, if he returns.

The promise begins with a call to him: “If you return, I will restore you” (15:19).

Ezekiel asks that God not bring the remnant of Israel to an end: Oh, Lord GOD, will You bring the remnant of Israel to a complete end? Ezekiel 11:13

Promised, or told to wait The text ties it to the asking I will gather you from the peoples and assemble you from the countries to which you have been scattered, and I will give back to you the land of Israel. Ezekiel 11:17

Promised, or told to wait The text ties it to the asking Seventy weeks are decreed for your people and your holy city Daniel 9:24

The text: At the beginning of your petitions, an answer went out Daniel 9:23

Gabriel's answer, which went out at the beginning of his petitions, speaks of what is decreed for the people and the city over seventy weeks.

Gabriel's answer speaks of the city rebuilt “in times of distress” (9:25), and later destroyed (9:26).

Habakkuk asks that God act against violence and injustice: How long, O LORD, must I call for help but You do not hear, or cry out to You, “Violence!” but You do not save? Habakkuk 1:2

One hillside path ending at fallen stones while another quieter path curves toward dawn
Some requests in the text are met differently from the form in which they were made.

In its own terms: Gethsemane

In Gethsemane Jesus asks, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will.” (Matthew 26:39). He goes away a second time and prays, “My Father, if this cup cannot pass unless I drink it, may Your will be done.” (Matthew 26:42), and a third time, “saying the same thing” (Matthew 26:44). Mark and Luke tell it too (Mark 14:36; Luke 22:42).

The asking and the yielding come in the same prayer, so the page does not count it as given or not given. Luke adds that “an angel from heaven appeared to Him and strengthened Him” (Luke 22:43), in verses some early manuscripts do not have. That night He is arrested (Matthew 26:47–50). Hebrews says that during His earthly life He “offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the One who could save Him from death, and He was heard because of His reverence” (Hebrews 5:7), words many readers connect with Gethsemane.

How long they waited

The text gives a time for 31 of the requests. It runs from “Before the servant had finished praying” (Genesis 24:15) to twenty years and more. Where the text gives only a span, the page gives the span and the arithmetic behind it, never a single figure the text does not give.

For most requests it gives no time at all. Hannah's son is born “in the course of time” (1 Samuel 1:20).

While they were still praying

  • Before he had finished praying Abraham's servant asks for success in finding a wife for Isaac, and a sign to know her by Genesis 24:12

  • After his servant looked toward the sea seven times Elijah, as James tells it asks for rain James 5:18In 1 Kings, Elijah bows down on Mount Carmel while his servant looks toward the sea seven times; then heavy rain begins (1 Kings 18:42–45).

Months

  • About three and a half months Ezra and the returning exiles asks for a safe journey to Jerusalem Ezra 8:21They set out from the Ahava Canal on the twelfth day of the first month (8:31) and arrive in Jerusalem on the first day of the fifth month (7:9).
  • About four months Nehemiah asks for success, and mercy from the king Nehemiah 1:11He hears the news and begins to pray in the month of Chislev (1:1–4) and speaks to the king in the month of Nisan (2:1), four months later. He dates both to the twentieth year.

Years

  • Up to about seven years Rachel asks for a child of her own Genesis 30:22Rachel marries Jacob when his first seven years of service are complete (29:20–28). Joseph is born before Jacob asks to leave, when the fourteen years for Laban's daughters are done (30:25–26; 31:41). The text does not say when she prayed.
  • Up to twenty years Isaac asks for a child, as his wife was barren Genesis 25:21Isaac is forty when he marries Rebekah (25:20) and sixty when the twins are born (25:26). The text says only that he prayed later.
  • More than twenty years Jacob asks for God's care on his journey, and a safe return home Genesis 28:20–21He serves Laban twenty years (31:38, 41) before he sets out for home.
  • Up to twenty-five years Abraham asks for an heir of his own Genesis 15:2–3Abraham is seventy-five when he leaves Haran (12:4) and a hundred when Isaac is born (21:5). The text does not date this prayer within those years.

How long what was given lasted

  • About a full day Joshua asks that the sun and moon stand still Joshua 10:12
  • Fifteen more years Hezekiah asks to live, when told he would die 2 Kings 20:3Hezekiah reigns twenty-nine years (18:2), and the Assyrian attack of the time of his illness comes in his fourteenth year (18:13; 20:6), which leaves fifteen.
  • Three and a half years Elijah, as James tells it asks that it not rain James 5:17

The Bible sometimes names the wait: before a prayer ends, days, months or years.

What they asked for, and for whom

People ask most for guidance, for rescue and for mercy. Requests for judgment on others are rarely told as given: three of fifteen. For ten of the others, most of them Nehemiah's, Jeremiah's or in Lamentations, the text does not say what came of them; two are answered with a promise, or told to wait.

The Psalms, counted apart

The Psalms are full of requests, but they seldom tell what came of one, so they are not counted above. Of the 150 psalms, 110 speak to God. In 18 the psalmist says that God heard or answered him, and six more say it of others. Nine ask “How long?”, and three ask God to answer quickly.

Psalm 22 holds both: “I cry out by day, O my God, but You do not answer” (Psalm 22:2), and later, “You have answered me!” (Psalm 22:21). Psalm 88 ends without an answer: “darkness is my closest companion” (Psalm 88:18).

Psalms that say God heard or answered

Six more say it of others: of the people of Israel, of Moses, Aaron and Samuel, and of the king.

  • He answers him from His holy heaven Psalm 20:6
  • He asked You for life, and You granted it Psalm 21:4
  • I answered you from the cloud of thunder Psalm 81:7
  • They called to the LORD and He answered Psalm 99:6
  • Nevertheless He heard their cry Psalm 106:44
  • Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress Psalm 107:6

  • How long, O LORD? Will You be angry forever? Will Your jealousy burn like fire? Psalm 79:5
  • O LORD God of Hosts, how long will Your anger smolder against the prayers of Your people? Psalm 80:4

How this was made

Which requests. The starting point is every prayer whose words the Bible gives outside the Psalms, and every verse that tells of someone praying without giving the words, as gathered on Prayers in the Bible: 188 prayers and 87 such verses. Each was read for what it asks of God. 111 of the prayers and 36 of the verses hold a request, and a few more are other tellings of a request counted once; the rest are praise, thanks, confession, complaint, or prayers whose request is not given, and each is listed above with its reason. A reading of the whole Bible for words of asking and answering added 36 requests, among them requests taken to God through a prophet, such as Josiah's through Huldah (2 Kings 22:13).

What counts as a request. A request asks God to do, give, show or tell something, in so many words or by a question, as when Samson asks, “Must I now die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?” (Judges 15:18). Complaints that only ask why, and objections, do not count. Words given for others to pray are not counted, except the priests' words in Joel 2:17, whose answer the text tells. Requests to the angel of the LORD, and to the man who wrestles with Jacob, count, since the text has them speak for God. The prayers in the letters are listed on Prayers in the Bible and not counted here, except where a letter tells what came of a request (2 Corinthians 12:8; James 5:17–18). Where the text says only that God heard or listened, the request is taken from what follows, and the page marks it as implied.

What came of it. The outcome is what the text records after the request, in the same book or where another book tells the same story. It is tied to the asking only when the text says God heard, answered, listened, granted, relented, remembered or did as asked, when it gives His reply, or a prophet's word from Him, to the one asking, or when His word links the two, as when God tells Abimelech that Abraham “will pray for you and you will live” (Genesis 20:7). A later book can tie it, as Nehemiah does for the cries in the time of the judges: “From heaven You heard them” (Nehemiah 9:27). In the books of the prophets, God's words that follow a prayer count as a reply only when the text presents them as said to the one praying. A wait is given only where the text gives a time, counted from the asking.

The words shown. Each quotation is the Berean Standard Bible's2 own wording, with three dots where words are left out, and every quotation and reference on the page has been checked against its verse. Who speaks in each verse of a conversation comes from Faith Comes By Hearing's list of speakers1.

The data. Every request, with its verses and the reason for each decision, is in answered-prayers.json.

Questions people ask

What are some answered prayers in the Bible?

Jabez asks to be blessed, and the text says “God granted the request of Jabez” (1 Chronicles 4:10). Hannah asks for a son and later says “the LORD has granted me what I asked of Him” (1 Samuel 1:27). Isaac prays for his wife, who was barren, and “the LORD heard his prayer” (Genesis 25:21). Elijah asks that a widow's son live again, and “the LORD listened to the voice of Elijah” (1 Kings 17:22). God answers Hezekiah, “I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. I will surely heal you.” (2 Kings 20:5). On this page's reading, the text ties the outcome to the asking in 121 of 197 requests.

Are there unanswered prayers in the Bible?

Yes, if unanswered means not given: the text records 16 requests that were not given. In some, God refuses. Moses asks to cross the Jordan and is told, “Do not speak to Me again about this matter.” (Deuteronomy 3:26). Twice Saul asks and gets no answer at all (1 Samuel 14:37; 1 Samuel 28:6). David pleads for his child, who dies on the seventh day (2 Samuel 12:18). For 39 more requests the text does not say what came of them, which is not the same as a refusal.

What did God say when Paul asked three times?

Paul pleaded three times for his thorn in the flesh to be taken away. The answer he reports is, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Who in the Bible asked God to die?

Three people ask God outright to take their lives: Moses (Numbers 11:15), Elijah (1 Kings 19:4) and Jonah (Jonah 4:3). None of them is taken: Moses is given elders to share his burden, an angel feeds Elijah, and God asks Jonah, “Have you any right to be angry?” (Jonah 4:4). Job wishes that God would crush him (Job 6:8–9), speaking of God rather than to Him, and Samson's last words are “Let me die with the Philistines” (Judges 16:30).

How long did people wait for answers to prayer in the Bible?

Where the text says, from “Before the servant had finished praying” (Genesis 24:15) to many years. Isaac prays at some point in the twenty years between his marriage at forty and the birth of his twins when he is sixty (Genesis 25:20, 26). Daniel waits three weeks (Daniel 10:2, 12–13), Jeremiah ten days for an answer to bring to the people (Jeremiah 42:7), and Ezra's company about three and a half months for the safe journey God granted, from the twelfth day of the first month to the first day of the fifth (Ezra 8:31; 7:9). Most of the time the text does not say.
