The short answer

188prayers whose words the Bible gives, outside the Psalms
110of the 150 psalms that speak to God
87more times the Bible says someone prayed without giving the words

Using this page's broad definition, the 66-book Bible records the words of 188 distinct prayers outside the Psalms, or 207 when repeated tellings are counted separately, as when Chronicles retells Samuel and Kings. Of the 188 distinct prayers, 162 are in the Old Testament and 26 in the New. The first included speech is Adam's reply to God after eating from the tree: “I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid” (Genesis 3:10). The last is the Bible's closing prayer: “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20).

Many are conversations: in 54 of them God answers, or has just spoken. 5 are songs of praise, among them the song at the sea and Mary's Magnificat, and 12 are words given for others to pray, among them the words for the offering of firstfruits in Deuteronomy and the Lord's Prayer.

Who prays

Moses prays most, 18 times, among them his objections at the burning bush, his offer to be blotted out of God's book for the people's sake, and his plea to see the promised land. Jeremiah follows with 15, many of them the laments often called his confessions, and David with 12, not counting the psalms that carry his name. Isaiah and Job each have 10, all of Job's within his speeches, and Jesus 9. The Israelites pray together 8 times, half of them to ask about going up to battle.

Jesus's prayers

The Gospels give the words of 9 of Jesus's prayers, counting the Lord's Prayer, which he teaches his disciples. From the cross he prays three times: “Father, forgive them”, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” and “Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit”. The Bible also says he prayed in 25 more verses without giving his words: before dawn in a solitary place, all night before choosing the Twelve, at his baptism and the transfiguration, and in the blessings and thanks he gives over bread, for the crowds, at the Last Supper and at Emmaus.

Later manuscripts end the prayer with a line that the King James Version gives: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

    Luke 11:2–4

2 So Jesus told them, “When you pray, say: ‘Father, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. 3 Give us each day our daily bread. 4 And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.’”

    Luke 10:21

21 At that time Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and declared, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was well-pleasing in Your sight.

Yet not as I will, but as You will.” 40 Then Jesus returned to the disciples and found them sleeping. “Were you not able to keep watch with Me for one hour?” He asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not enter into temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.” 42 A second time He went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cup cannot pass unless I drink it, may Your will be done.”

    Mark 14:36

  • Father, the hour has come. John 17:1–26 26 verses
    The whole prayer, 26 verses
1 When Jesus had spoken these things, He lifted up His eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son may glorify You. 2 For You granted Him authority over all people, so that He may give eternal life to all those You have given Him. 3 Now this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent. 4 I have glorified You on earth by accomplishing the work You gave Me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify Me in Your presence with the glory I had with You before the world existed. 6 I have revealed Your name to those You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours; You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. 7 Now they know that everything You have given Me comes from You. 8 For I have given them the words You gave Me, and they have received them. They knew with certainty that I came from You, and they believed that You sent Me. 9 I ask on their behalf. I do not ask on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those You have given Me; for they are Yours. 10 All I have is Yours, and all You have is Mine; and in them I have been glorified. 11 I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father, protect them by Your name, the name You gave Me, so that they may be one as We are one. 12 While I was with them, I protected and preserved them by Your name, the name You gave Me. Not one of them has been lost, except the son of destruction, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to You; and I am saying these things while I am in the world, so that they may have My joy fulfilled within them. 14 I have given them Your word and the world has hated them. For they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I am not asking that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth. 18 As You sent Me into the world, I have also sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify Myself, so that they too may be sanctified by the truth. 20 I am not asking on behalf of them alone, but also on behalf of those who will believe in Me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I am in You. May they also be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 I have given them the glory You gave Me, so that they may be one as We are one— 23 I in them and You in Me—that they may be perfectly united, so that the world may know that You sent Me and have loved them just as You have loved Me. 24 Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me where I am, that they may see the glory You gave Me because You loved Me before the foundation of the world. 25 Righteous Father, although the world has not known You, I know You, and they know that You sent Me. 26 And I have made Your name known to them and will continue to make it known, so that the love You have for Me may be in them, and I in them.”

After the resurrection, 6 prayers are addressed to the risen Jesus: Stephen's “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit”, Saul's “Who are You, Lord?” on the road to Damascus, Ananias's in a vision, Paul's in a trance in the temple, “Come, O Lord!” at the end of 1 Corinthians, and the Bible's closing prayer, “Come, Lord Jesus!”.

The Psalms

110 of the 150 psalms speak to God in at least one verse, 842 verses in all, almost as many as all 188 prayers elsewhere put together, which run to 864. Psalm 119 speaks to God in 165 of its 176 verses. David's name heads 73 psalms, and 63 of them speak to God; Asaph's heads 12, and the sons of Korah 11. 50 psalms carry no name, and 27 of those speak to God.

87 times the Bible says someone prayed and does not give the words, 39 in the Old Testament and 48 in the New. Isaac prays for Rebekah, who had no children (Genesis 25:21); Daniel kneels three times a day toward Jerusalem (Daniel 6:10); Paul and Silas pray at midnight in prison (Acts 16:25). Jesus is the one most often said to pray without his words given, in 25 verses, 13 of them when he gives thanks or speaks a blessing over bread.

Prayers in the letters

The letters are full of prayer, but almost none of it is spoken to God. Paul tells his readers what he thanks God for and what he asks God to do for them, and he writes prayers for them into the letter: “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him” (Romans 15:13). Because these are addressed to the readers, they are listed here, letter by letter, and not counted above.

There are 42 passages in all: 19 give thanks, 12 say what the writer asks, and 11 are prayers written out for the readers. Some thanks are a single line, such as “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” (2 Corinthians 9:15). Paul gives thanks for his readers in 10 of the 13 letters that carry his name; Galatians and Titus have none of these passages. Epaphras, the writer of Hebrews and the elder of 3 John add their own.

10 “I heard Your voice in the garden,” he replied, “and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.” 11 “Who told you that you were naked?” asked the LORD God. “Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 And the man answered, “The woman whom You gave me, she gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

Genesis 4:9–14Cain
Am I my brother’s keeper?
9 And the LORD said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I do not know!” he answered. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” 10 “What have you done?” replied the LORD. “The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground. 11 Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. 12 When you till the ground, it will no longer yield its produce to you. You will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.” 13 But Cain said to the LORD, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14 Behold, this day You have driven me from the face of the earth, and from Your face I will be hidden; I will be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”

Genesis 15:2–8Abraham
O Lord GOD, what can You give me, since I remain childless…
2 But Abram replied, “O Lord GOD, what can You give me, since I remain childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 Abram continued, “Behold, You have given me no offspring, so a servant in my household will be my heir.” 4 Then the word of the LORD came to Abram, saying, “This one will not be your heir, but one who comes from your own body will be your heir.” 5 And the LORD took him outside and said, “Now look to the heavens and count the stars, if you are able.” Then He told him, “So shall your offspring be.” 6 Abram believed the LORD, and it was credited to him as righteousness. 7 The LORD also told him, “I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.” 8 But Abram replied, “Lord GOD, how can I know that I will possess it?”

Genesis 18:23–32Abraham
Will You really sweep away the righteous with the wicked?
23 Abraham stepped forward and said, “Will You really sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24 What if there are fifty righteous ones in the city? Will You really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous ones who are there? 25 Far be it from You to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous and the wicked are treated alike. Far be it from You! Will not the Judge of all the earth do what is right?” 26 So the LORD replied, “If I find fifty righteous ones within the city of Sodom, on their account I will spare the whole place.” 27 Then Abraham answered, “Now that I have ventured to speak to the Lord—though I am but dust and ashes— 28 suppose the fifty righteous ones lack five. Will You destroy the whole city for the lack of five?” He replied, “If I find forty-five there, I will not destroy it.” 29 Once again Abraham spoke to the LORD, “Suppose forty are found there?” He answered, “On account of the forty, I will not do it.” 30 Then Abraham said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak further. Suppose thirty are found there?” He replied, “If I find thirty there, I will not do it.” 31 And Abraham said, “Now that I have ventured to speak to the Lord, suppose twenty are found there?” He answered, “On account of the twenty, I will not destroy it.” 32 Finally, Abraham said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak once more. Suppose ten are found there?” And He answered, “On account of the ten, I will not destroy it.”

12 “O LORD, God of my master Abraham,” he prayed, “please grant me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. 13 Here I am, standing beside the spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. 14 Now may it happen that the girl to whom I say, ‘Please let down your jar that I may drink,’ and who responds, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels as well’—let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. Now if a maiden comes out to draw water and I say to her, ‘Please let me drink a little water from your jar,’ 44 and she replies, ‘Drink, and I will draw water for your camels as well,’ may she be the woman the LORD has appointed for my master’s son.

11 But Moses asked God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” 12 “I will surely be with you,” God said, “and this will be the sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, all of you will worship God on this mountain.” 13 Then Moses asked God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is His name?’ What should I tell them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” 15 God also told Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is how I am to be remembered in every generation. 16 Go, assemble the elders of Israel and say to them, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—has appeared to me and said: I have surely attended to you and have seen what has been done to you in Egypt. 17 And I have promised to bring you up out of your affliction in Egypt, into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites—a land flowing with milk and honey.’ 18 The elders of Israel will listen to what you say, and you must go with them to the king of Egypt and tell him, ‘The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Now please let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness, so that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.’ 19 But I know that the king of Egypt will not allow you to go unless a mighty hand compels him. 20 So I will stretch out My hand and strike the Egyptians with all the wonders I will perform among them. And after that, he will release you. 21 And I will grant this people such favor in the sight of the Egyptians that when you leave, you will not go away empty-handed. 22 Every woman shall ask her neighbor and any woman staying in her house for silver and gold jewelry and clothing, and you will put them on your sons and daughters. So you will plunder the Egyptians.” 4:1 Then Moses answered, “What if they do not believe me or listen to my voice? For they may say, ‘The LORD has not appeared to you.’” 4:2 And the LORD asked him, “What is that in your hand?” “A staff,” he replied. 4:3 “Throw it on the ground,” said the LORD. So Moses threw it on the ground, and it became a snake, and he ran from it. 4:4 “Stretch out your hand and grab it by the tail,” the LORD said to Moses, who reached out his hand and caught the snake, and it turned back into a staff in his hand. 4:5 “This is so that they may believe that the LORD, the God of their fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has appeared to you.” 4:6 Furthermore, the LORD said to Moses, “Put your hand inside your cloak.” So he put his hand inside his cloak, and when he took it out, his hand was leprous, white as snow. 4:7 “Put your hand back inside your cloak,” said the LORD. So Moses put his hand back inside his cloak, and when he took it out, it was restored, like the rest of his skin. 4:8 And the LORD said, “If they refuse to believe you or heed the witness of the first sign, they may believe that of the second. 4:9 But if they do not believe even these two signs or listen to your voice, take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry ground. Then the water you take from the Nile will become blood on the ground.” 4:10 “Please, Lord,” Moses replied, “I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since You have spoken to Your servant, for I am slow of speech and tongue.” 4:11 And the LORD said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Or who makes the mute or the deaf, the sighted or the blind? Is it not I, the LORD? 4:12 Now go! I will help you as you speak, and I will teach you what to say.” 4:13 But Moses replied, “Please, Lord, send someone else.”

I will sing to the LORD, for He is highly exalted.
1 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD: “I will sing to the LORD, for He is highly exalted. The horse and rider He has thrown into the sea. 2 The LORD is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise Him, my father’s God, and I will exalt Him. 3 The LORD is a warrior, the LORD is His name. 4 Pharaoh’s chariots and army He has cast into the sea; the finest of his officers are drowned in the Red Sea. 5 The depths have covered them; they sank there like a stone. 6 Your right hand, O LORD, is majestic in power; Your right hand, O LORD, has shattered the enemy. 7 You overthrew Your adversaries by Your great majesty. You unleashed Your burning wrath; it consumed them like stubble. 8 At the blast of Your nostrils the waters piled up; like a wall the currents stood firm; the depths congealed in the heart of the sea. 9 The enemy declared, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake. I will divide the spoils; I will gorge myself on them. I will draw my sword; my hand will destroy them.’ 10 But You blew with Your breath, and the sea covered them. They sank like lead in the mighty waters. 11 Who among the gods is like You, O LORD? Who is like You—majestic in holiness, revered with praises, performing wonders? 12 You stretched out Your right hand, and the earth swallowed them up. 13 With loving devotion You will lead the people You have redeemed; with Your strength You will guide them to Your holy dwelling. 14 The nations will hear and tremble; anguish will grip the dwellers of Philistia. 15 Then the chiefs of Edom will be dismayed; trembling will seize the leaders of Moab; those who dwell in Canaan will melt away, 16 and terror and dread will fall on them. By the power of Your arm they will be as still as a stone until Your people pass by, O LORD, until the people You have bought pass by. 17 You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain of Your inheritance— the place, O LORD, You have prepared for Your dwelling, the sanctuary, O Lord, Your hands have established. 18 The LORD will reign forever and ever!”

Did I give them birth, so that You should tell me, ‘Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries an infant,’ to the land that You swore to give their fathers? 13 Where can I get meat for all these people? For they keep crying out to me, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ 14 I cannot carry all these people by myself; it is too burdensome for me. 15 If this is how You are going to treat me, please kill me right now—if I have found favor in Your eyes—and let me not see my own wretchedness.” 16 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Bring Me seventy of the elders of Israel known to you as leaders and officers of the people. Bring them to the Tent of Meeting and have them stand there with you. 17 And I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take some of the Spirit that is on you and put that Spirit on them. They will help you bear the burden of the people, so that you do not have to bear it by yourself. 18 And say to the people: Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you will eat meat, because you have cried out in the hearing of the LORD, saying: ‘Who will feed us meat? For we were better off in Egypt!’ Therefore the LORD will give you meat, and you will eat. 19 You will eat it not for one or two days, nor for five or ten or twenty days, 20 but for a whole month—until it comes out of your nostrils and makes you nauseous—because you have rejected the LORD, who is among you, and have cried out before Him, saying, ‘Why did we ever leave Egypt?’” 21 But Moses replied, “Here I am among 600,000 men on foot, yet You say, ‘I will give them meat, and they will eat for a month.’ 22 If all our flocks and herds were slaughtered for them, would they have enough? I will sing to the LORD; I will sing praise to the LORD, the God of Israel. 4 O LORD, when You went out from Seir, when You marched from the land of Edom, the earth trembled, the heavens poured out rain, and the clouds poured down water. 5 The mountains quaked before the LORD, the One of Sinai, before the LORD, the God of Israel. 6 In the days of Shamgar son of Anath, in the days of Jael, the highways were deserted and the travelers took the byways. 7 Life in the villages ceased; it ended in Israel, until I, Deborah, arose, a mother in Israel. 8 When they chose new gods, then war came to their gates. Not a shield or spear was found among forty thousand in Israel. 9 My heart is with the princes of Israel, with the volunteers among the people. Bless the LORD! 10 You who ride white donkeys, who sit on saddle blankets, and you who travel the road, ponder 11 the voices of the singers at the watering places. There they shall recount the righteous acts of the LORD, the righteous deeds of His villagers in Israel. Then the people of the LORD went down to the gates: 12 ‘Awake, awake, O Deborah! Awake, awake, sing a song! Arise, O Barak, and take hold of your captives, O son of Abinoam!’ 13 Then the survivors came down to the nobles; the people of the LORD came down to me against the mighty. 14 Some came from Ephraim, with their roots in Amalek; Benjamin came with your people after you. The commanders came down from Machir, the bearers of the marshal’s staff from Zebulun. 15 The princes of Issachar were with Deborah, and Issachar was with Barak, rushing into the valley at his heels. In the clans of Reuben there was great indecision. 16 Why did you sit among the sheepfolds to hear the whistling for the flocks? In the clans of Reuben there was great indecision. 17 Gilead remained beyond the Jordan. Dan, why did you linger by the ships? Asher stayed at the coast and remained in his harbors. 18 Zebulun was a people who risked their lives; Naphtali, too, on the heights of the battlefield. 19 Kings came and fought; then the kings of Canaan fought at Taanach by the waters of Megiddo, but they took no plunder of silver. 20 From the heavens the stars fought; from their courses they fought against Sisera. 21 The River Kishon swept them away, the ancient river, the River Kishon. March on, O my soul, in strength! 22 Then the hooves of horses thundered— the mad galloping of his stallions. 23 ‘Curse Meroz,’ says the angel of the LORD. ‘Bitterly curse her inhabitants; for they did not come to help the LORD, to help the LORD against the mighty.’ 24 Most blessed among women is Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, most blessed of tent-dwelling women. 25 He asked for water, and she gave him milk. In a magnificent bowl she brought him curds. 26 She reached for the tent peg, her right hand for the workman’s hammer. She struck Sisera and crushed his skull; she shattered and pierced his temple. 27 At her feet he collapsed, he fell, there he lay still; at her feet he collapsed, he fell; where he collapsed, there he fell dead. 28 Sisera’s mother looked through the window; she peered through the lattice and lamented: ‘Why is his chariot so long in coming? What has delayed the clatter of his chariots?’ 29 Her wisest ladies answer; indeed she keeps telling herself, 30 ‘Are they not finding and dividing the spoil— a girl or two for each warrior, a plunder of dyed garments for Sisera, the spoil of embroidered garments for the neck of the looter?’ 31 So may all Your enemies perish, O LORD! But may those who love You shine like the sun at its brightest.” And the land had rest for forty years.

And where are all His wonders of which our fathers told us, saying, ‘Has not the LORD brought us up out of Egypt?’ But now the LORD has forsaken us and delivered us into the hand of Midian.” 14 The LORD turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel from the hand of Midian. Am I not sending you?” 15 “Please, my Lord,” Gideon replied, “how can I save Israel? Indeed, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my father’s house.” 16 “Surely I will be with you,” the LORD replied, “and you will strike down all the Midianites as one man.” 17 Gideon answered, “If I have found favor in Your sight, give me a sign that it is You speaking with me. 18 Please do not depart from this place until I return to You. Let me bring my offering and set it before You.” And the LORD said, “I will stay until you return.” 19 So Gideon went in and prepared a young goat and unleavened bread and an ephah of flour. He placed the meat in a basket and the broth in a pot and brought them out to present to Him under the oak. 20 And the angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened bread, lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth.” And Gideon did so. 21 Then the angel of the LORD extended the tip of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened bread. And fire flared from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened bread. Then the angel of the LORD vanished from his sight. 22 When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the LORD, he said, “Oh no, Lord GOD! I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face!”

When he came to the man, he asked, “Are you the man who spoke to my wife?” “I am,” he said. 12 Then Manoah asked, “When your words come to pass, what will be the boy’s rule of life and mission?” 13 So the angel of the LORD answered Manoah, “Your wife is to do everything I told her. 14 She must not eat anything that comes from the vine, nor drink any wine or strong drink, nor eat anything unclean. She must do everything I have commanded her.” 15 “Please stay here,” Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, “and we will prepare a young goat for you.” 16 And the angel of the LORD replied, “Even if I stay, I will not eat your food. But if you prepare a burnt offering, offer it to the LORD.” For Manoah did not know that it was the angel of the LORD. 17 Then Manoah said to the angel of the LORD, “What is your name, so that we may honor you when your word comes to pass?”

My mouth speaks boldly against my enemies, for I rejoice in Your salvation. 2 There is no one holy like the LORD. Indeed, there is no one besides You! And there is no Rock like our God. 3 Do not boast so proudly, or let arrogance come from your mouth, for the LORD is a God who knows, and by Him actions are weighed. 4 The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble are equipped with strength. 5 The well-fed hire themselves out for food, but the starving hunger no more. The barren woman gives birth to seven, but she who has many sons pines away. 6 The LORD brings death and gives life; He brings down to Sheol and raises up. 7 The LORD sends poverty and wealth; He humbles and He exalts. 8 He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap. He seats them among princes and bestows on them a throne of honor. For the foundations of the earth are the LORD’s, and upon them He has set the world. 9 He guards the steps of His faithful ones, but the wicked perish in darkness; for by his own strength shall no man prevail. 10 Those who oppose the LORD will be shattered. He will thunder from heaven against them. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth and will give power to His king. He will exalt the horn of His anointed.”

The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.
2 He said: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer. 3 My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation. My stronghold, my refuge, and my Savior, You save me from violence. 4 I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies. 5 For the waves of death engulfed me; the torrents of chaos overwhelmed me. 6 The cords of Sheol entangled me; the snares of death confronted me. 7 In my distress I called upon the LORD; I cried out to my God. And from His temple He heard my voice, and my cry for help reached His ears. 8 Then the earth shook and quaked; the foundations of the heavens trembled; they were shaken because He burned with anger. 9 Smoke rose from His nostrils, and consuming fire came from His mouth; glowing coals blazed forth. 10 He parted the heavens and came down with dark clouds beneath His feet. 11 He mounted a cherub and flew; He soared on the wings of the wind. 12 He made darkness a canopy around Him, a gathering of water and thick clouds. 13 From the brightness of His presence coals of fire blazed forth. 14 The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. 15 He shot His arrows and scattered the foes; He hurled lightning and routed them. 16 The channels of the sea appeared, and the foundations of the world were exposed at the rebuke of the LORD, at the blast of the breath of His nostrils. 17 He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters. 18 He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from foes too mighty for me. 19 They confronted me in my day of calamity, but the LORD was my support. 20 He brought me out into the open; He rescued me because He delighted in me. 21 The LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness; He has repaid me according to the cleanness of my hands. 22 For I have kept the ways of the LORD and have not wickedly departed from my God. 23 For all His ordinances are before me; I have not disregarded His statutes. 24 And I have been blameless before Him and kept myself from iniquity. 25 So the LORD has repaid me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in His sight. 26 To the faithful You show Yourself faithful, to the blameless You show Yourself blameless; 27 to the pure You show Yourself pure, but to the crooked You show Yourself shrewd. 28 You save an afflicted people, but Your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down. 29 For You, O LORD, are my lamp; the LORD lights up my darkness. 30 For in You I can charge an army; with my God I can scale a wall. 31 As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him. 32 For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God? 33 God is my strong fortress, and He makes my way clear. 34 He makes my feet like those of a deer and stations me upon the heights. 35 He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. 36 You have given me Your shield of salvation, and Your gentleness exalts me. 37 You broaden the path beneath me so that my ankles do not give way. 38 I pursued my enemies and destroyed them; I did not turn back until they were consumed. 39 I devoured and crushed them so they could not rise; they have fallen under my feet. 40 You have armed me with strength for battle; You have subdued my foes beneath me. 41 You have made my enemies retreat before me; I destroyed those who hated me. 42 They looked, but there was no one to save them— to the LORD, but He did not answer. 43 I ground them as the dust of the earth; I crushed and trampled them like mud in the streets. 44 You have delivered me from the strife of my people; You have preserved me as the head of nations; a people I had not known shall serve me. 45 Foreigners cower before me; when they hear me, they obey me. 46 Foreigners lose heart and come trembling from their strongholds. 47 The LORD lives, and blessed be my Rock! And may God, the Rock of my salvation, be exalted— 48 the God who avenges me and brings down nations beneath me, 49 who frees me from my enemies. You exalt me above my foes; You rescue me from violent men. 50 Therefore I will praise You, O LORD, among the nations; I will sing praises to Your name. 51 Great salvation He brings to His king. He shows loving devotion to His anointed, to David and his descendants forever.”

What You spoke with Your mouth You have fulfilled with Your hand this day. 25 Therefore now, O LORD, God of Israel, keep for Your servant, my father David, what You promised when You said: ‘You will never fail to have a man to sit before Me on the throne of Israel, if only your descendants guard their way to walk before Me as you have done.’ 26 And now, O God of Israel, please confirm what You promised to Your servant, my father David. 27 But will God indeed dwell upon the earth? The heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain You, much less this temple I have built. 28 Yet regard the prayer and plea of Your servant, O LORD my God, so that You may hear the cry and the prayer that Your servant is praying before You today. 29 May Your eyes be open toward this temple night and day, toward the place of which You said, ‘My Name shall be there,’ so that You may hear the prayer that Your servant prays toward this place. 30 Hear the plea of Your servant and of Your people Israel when they pray toward this place. May You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place. May You hear and forgive. 31 When a man sins against his neighbor and is required to take an oath, and he comes to take an oath before Your altar in this temple, 32 then may You hear from heaven and act. May You judge Your servants, condemning the wicked man by bringing down on his own head what he has done, and justifying the righteous man by rewarding him according to his righteousness. 33 When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have sinned against You, and they return to You and confess Your name, praying and pleading with You in this temple, 34 then may You hear from heaven and forgive the sin of Your people Israel. May You restore them to the land You gave to their fathers. 35 When the skies are shut and there is no rain because Your people have sinned against You, and they pray toward this place and confess Your name, and they turn from their sins because You have afflicted them, 36 then may You hear from heaven and forgive the sin of Your servants, Your people Israel, so that You may teach them the good way in which they should walk. May You send rain on the land that You gave Your people as an inheritance. 37 When famine or plague comes upon the land, or blight or mildew or locusts or grasshoppers, or when their enemy besieges them in their cities, whatever plague or sickness may come, 38 then may whatever prayer or petition Your people Israel make—each knowing his own afflictions and spreading out his hands toward this temple— 39 be heard by You from heaven, Your dwelling place. And may You forgive and act, and repay each man according to all his ways, since You know his heart—for You alone know the hearts of all men— 40 so that they may fear You all the days they live in the land that You gave to our fathers. 41 And as for the foreigner who is not of Your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of Your name— 42 for they will hear of Your great name and mighty hand and outstretched arm—when he comes and prays toward this temple, 43 then may You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place, and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to You. Then all the peoples of the earth will know Your name and fear You, as do Your people Israel, and they will know that this house I have built is called by Your Name. 44 When Your people go to war against their enemies, wherever You send them, and when they pray to the LORD in the direction of the city You have chosen and the house I have built for Your Name, 45 then may You hear from heaven their prayer and their plea, and may You uphold their cause. 46 When they sin against You—for there is no one who does not sin—and You become angry with them and deliver them to an enemy who takes them as captives to his own land, whether far or near, 47 and when they come to their senses in the land to which they were taken, and they repent and plead with You in the land of their captors, saying, ‘We have sinned and done wrong; we have acted wickedly,’ 48 and when they return to You with all their heart and soul in the land of the enemies who took them captive, and when they pray to You in the direction of the land that You gave to their fathers, the city You have chosen, and the house I have built for Your Name, 49 then may You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place, their prayer and petition, and may You uphold their cause. 50 May You forgive Your people who have sinned against You and all the transgressions they have committed against You, and may You grant them compassion in the eyes of their captors to show them mercy. 51 For they are Your people and Your inheritance; You brought them out of Egypt, out of the furnace for iron. 52 May Your eyes be open to the pleas of Your servant and of Your people Israel, and may You listen to them whenever they call to You. 53 For You, O Lord GOD, have set them apart from all the peoples of the earth as Your inheritance, as You spoke through Your servant Moses when You brought our fathers out of Egypt.”

Yours, O LORD, is the kingdom, and You are exalted as head over all. 12 Both riches and honor come from You, and You are the ruler over all. In Your hands are power and might to exalt and give strength to all. 13 Now therefore, our God, we give You thanks, and we praise Your glorious name. 14 But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? For everything comes from You, and from Your own hand we have given to You. 15 For we are foreigners and strangers in Your presence, as were all our forefathers. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope. 16 O LORD our God, from Your hand comes all this abundance that we have provided to build You a house for Your holy Name, and all of it belongs to You. 17 I know, my God, that You test the heart and delight in uprightness. All these things I have given willingly and with an upright heart, and now I have seen Your people who are present here giving joyfully and willingly to You. 18 O LORD, God of our fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, keep this desire forever in the intentions of the hearts of Your people, and direct their hearts toward You. 19 And give my son Solomon a whole heart to keep and carry out all Your commandments, decrees, and statutes, and to build Your palace for which I have made provision.”

14 and said: “O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like You in heaven or on earth, keeping Your covenant of loving devotion with Your servants who walk before You with all their hearts. 15 You have kept Your promise to Your servant, my father David. What You spoke with Your mouth You have fulfilled with Your hand this day. 16 Therefore now, O LORD, God of Israel, keep for Your servant, my father David, what You promised when You said: ‘You will never fail to have a man to sit before Me on the throne of Israel, if only your descendants guard their way to walk in My law as you have walked before Me.’ 17 And now, O LORD, God of Israel, please confirm what You promised to Your servant David. 18 But will God indeed dwell with man upon the earth? The heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain You, much less this temple I have built. 19 Yet regard the prayer and plea of Your servant, O LORD my God, so that You may hear the cry and the prayer that Your servant is praying before You. 20 May Your eyes be open toward this temple day and night, toward the place where You said You would put Your Name, so that You may hear the prayer that Your servant prays toward this place. 21 Hear the plea of Your servant and of Your people Israel when they pray toward this place. May You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place. May You hear and forgive. 22 When a man sins against his neighbor and is required to take an oath, and he comes to take an oath before Your altar in this temple, 23 then may You hear from heaven and act. May You judge Your servants, condemning the wicked man by bringing down on his own head what he has done, and justifying the righteous man by rewarding him according to his righteousness. 24 When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have sinned against You, and they return to You and confess Your name, praying and pleading before You in this temple, 25 then may You hear from heaven and forgive the sin of Your people Israel. May You restore them to the land You gave to them and their fathers. 26 When the skies are shut and there is no rain because Your people have sinned against You, and they pray toward this place and confess Your name, and they turn from their sins because You have afflicted them, 27 then may You hear from heaven and forgive the sin of Your servants, Your people Israel, so that You may teach them the good way in which they should walk. May You send rain on the land that You gave Your people as an inheritance. 28 When famine or plague comes upon the land, or blight or mildew or locusts or grasshoppers, or when their enemies besiege them in their cities, whatever plague or sickness may come, 29 then may whatever prayer or plea Your people Israel make—each knowing his own afflictions and spreading out his hands toward this temple— 30 be heard by You from heaven, Your dwelling place. And may You forgive and repay each man according to all his ways, since You know his heart—for You alone know the hearts of men— 31 so that they may fear You and walk in Your ways all the days they live in the land that You gave to our fathers. 32 And as for the foreigner who is not of Your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of Your great name and Your mighty hand and outstretched arm—when he comes and prays toward this temple, 33 then may You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place, and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to You. Then all the peoples of the earth will know Your name and fear You, as do Your people Israel, and they will know that this house I have built is called by Your Name. 34 When Your people go to war against their enemies, wherever You send them, and when they pray to You in the direction of this city You have chosen and the house I have built for Your Name, 35 then may You hear from heaven their prayer and their plea, and may You uphold their cause. 36 When they sin against You—for there is no one who does not sin—and You become angry with them and deliver them to an enemy who takes them as captives to a land far or near, 37 and when they come to their senses in the land to which they were taken, and they repent and plead with You in the land of their captors, saying, ‘We have sinned and done wrong; we have acted wickedly,’ 38 and when they return to You with all their heart and soul in the land of the enemies who took them captive, and when they pray in the direction of the land that You gave to their fathers, the city You have chosen, and the house I have built for Your Name, 39 then may You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place, their prayer and pleas, and may You uphold their cause. May You forgive Your people who sinned against You. 40 Now, my God, may Your eyes be open and Your ears attentive to the prayer offered in this place. 41 Now therefore, arise, O LORD God, and enter Your resting place, You and the ark of Your might. May Your priests, O LORD God, be clothed with salvation, and may Your godly ones rejoice in goodness. 42 O LORD God, do not reject Your anointed one. Remember Your loving devotion to Your servant David.”

We will cry out to You in our distress, and You will hear us and save us.’ 10 And now, here are the men of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, whom You did not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt. Because of our iniquities, we and our kings and priests have been delivered into the hands of the kings of the earth and subjected to the sword and to captivity, to pillage and humiliation, as we are this day. 8 But now, for a brief moment, grace has come from the LORD our God to preserve for us a remnant and to give us a stake in His holy place. Even in our bondage, our God has given us new life and light to our eyes. 9 Though we are slaves, our God has not forsaken us in our bondage, but He has extended to us grace in the sight of the kings of Persia, giving us new life to rebuild the house of our God and repair its ruins, and giving us a wall of protection in Judah and Jerusalem. 10 And now, our God, what can we say after this? For we have forsaken the commandments 11 that You gave through Your servants the prophets, saying: ‘The land that you are entering to possess is a land polluted by the impurity of its peoples and the abominations with which they have filled it from end to end. 12 Now, therefore, do not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters for your sons. Never seek their peace or prosperity, so that you may be strong and may eat the good things of the land, leaving it as an inheritance to your sons forever.’ 13 After all that has come upon us because of our evil deeds and our great guilt (though You, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserve and have given us such a remnant as this), 14 shall we again break Your commandments and intermarry with the peoples who commit these abominations? Would You not become so angry with us as to wipe us out, leaving no remnant or survivor? 15 O LORD, God of Israel, You are righteous! For we remain this day as a remnant. Here we are before You in our guilt, though because of it no one can stand before You.”

I confess the sins that we Israelites have committed against You. Both I and my father’s house have sinned. 7 We have behaved corruptly against You and have not kept the commandments, statutes, and ordinances that You gave Your servant Moses. 8 Remember, I pray, the word that You commanded Your servant Moses when You said, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations, 9 but if you return to Me and keep and practice My commandments, then even if your exiles have been banished to the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for My Name.’ 10 They are Your servants and Your people. You redeemed them by Your great power and mighty hand. 11 O Lord, may Your ear be attentive to my prayer and to the prayers of Your servants who delight to revere Your name. Nehemiah 9:5–38The Levites
Blessed be Your glorious name, and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise.
5 Then the Levites—Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah—said, “Stand up and bless the LORD your God from everlasting to everlasting: Blessed be Your glorious name, and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise. 6 You alone are the LORD. You created the heavens, the highest heavens with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to all things, and the host of heaven worships You. 7 You are the LORD, the God who chose Abram, who brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans and gave him the name Abraham. 8 You found his heart faithful before You, and made a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites and Hittites, of the Amorites and Perizzites, of the Jebusites and Girgashites— to give it to his descendants. You have kept Your promise, because You are righteous. 9 You saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt; You heard their cry at the Red Sea. 10 You performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh, all his officials, and all the people of his land, for You knew they had acted with arrogance against our fathers. You made a name for Yourself that endures to this day. 11 You divided the sea before them, and they crossed through it on dry ground. You hurled their pursuers into the depths like a stone into raging waters. 12 You led them with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, to light for them the way in which they should travel. 13 You came down on Mount Sinai and spoke with them from heaven. You gave them just ordinances, true laws, and good statutes and commandments. 14 You revealed to them Your holy Sabbath and gave them commandments and statutes and laws through Your servant Moses. 15 In their hunger You gave them bread from heaven; in their thirst You brought them water from the rock. You told them to go in and possess the land that You had sworn to give them. 16 But they and our fathers became arrogant and stiff-necked and did not obey Your commandments. 17 They refused to listen and failed to remember the wonders You performed among them. They stiffened their necks and appointed a leader to return them to their bondage in Egypt. But You are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in loving devotion, and You did not forsake them. 18 Even when they cast for themselves an image of a calf and said, ‘This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,’ and when they committed terrible blasphemies, 19 You in Your great compassion did not forsake them in the wilderness. By day the pillar of cloud never turned away from guiding them on their path; and by the night the pillar of fire illuminated the way they should go. 20 You gave Your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold Your manna from their mouths, and You gave them water for their thirst. 21 For forty years You sustained them in the wilderness, so that they lacked nothing. Their clothes did not wear out and their feet did not swell. 22 You gave them kingdoms and peoples and allotted to them every corner of the land. So they took the land of Sihon king of Heshbon and of Og king of Bashan. 23 You multiplied their descendants like the stars of heaven and brought them to the land You had told their fathers to enter and possess. 24 So their descendants went in and possessed the land; You subdued before them the Canaanites dwelling in the land. You delivered into their hands the kings and peoples of the land, to do with them as they wished. 25 They captured fortified cities and fertile land and took houses full of all goods, wells already dug, vineyards, olive groves, and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate and were filled; they grew fat and delighted in Your great goodness. 26 But they were disobedient and rebelled against You; they flung Your law behind their backs. They killed Your prophets, who had admonished them to return to You. They committed terrible blasphemies. 27 So You delivered them into the hands of enemies who oppressed them, and in their time of distress they cried out to You. From heaven You heard them, and in Your great compassion You gave them deliverers who saved them from the hands of their enemies. 28 But as soon as they had rest, they again did evil in Your sight. So You abandoned them to the hands of their enemies, who had dominion over them. When they cried out to You again, You heard from heaven, and You delivered them many times in Your compassion. 29 You admonished them to turn back to Your law, but they were arrogant and disobeyed Your commandments. They sinned against Your ordinances, by which a man will live if he practices them. They turned a stubborn shoulder; they stiffened their necks and would not obey. 30 You were patient with them for many years, and Your Spirit admonished them through Your prophets. Yet they would not listen, so You gave them into the hands of the neighboring peoples. 31 But in Your great compassion, You did not put an end to them; nor did You forsake them, for You are a gracious and compassionate God. 32 So now, our God, the great and mighty and awesome God who keeps His gracious covenant, do not view lightly all the hardship that has come upon us, and upon our kings and leaders, our priests and prophets, our ancestors and all Your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until today. 33 You are just in all that has befallen us, because You have acted faithfully, while we have acted wickedly. 34 Our kings and leaders and priests and fathers did not obey Your law or listen to Your commandments and warnings that You gave them. 35 For even while they were in their kingdom, with the abundant goodness that You had given them, and in the spacious and fertile land that You had set before them, they would not serve You or turn from their wicked ways. 36 So here we are today as slaves in the land You gave our fathers to enjoy its fruit and goodness— here we are as slaves! 37 Its abundant harvest goes to the kings You have set over us because of our sins. And they rule over our bodies and our livestock as they please. We are in great distress. 38 In view of all this, we make a binding agreement, putting it in writing and sealing it with the names of our leaders, Levites, and priests.”

22 Then I instructed the Levites to purify themselves and guard the gates in order to keep the Sabbath day holy. Remember me for this as well, O my God, and show me mercy according to Your abundant loving devotion. 23 In those days I also saw Jews who had married women from Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. 24 Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod or of the other peoples, but could not speak the language of Judah. 25 I rebuked them and called down curses on them. I beat some of these men and pulled out their hair. Then I made them take an oath before God and said, “You must not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters as wives for your sons or for yourselves! 26 Did not King Solomon of Israel sin in matters like this? There was not a king like him among many nations, and he was loved by his God, who made him king over all Israel—yet foreign women drew him into sin. 27 Must we now hear that you too are doing all this terrible evil and acting unfaithfully against our God by marrying foreign women?” 28 Even one of the sons of Jehoiada son of Eliashib the high priest had become a son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite. Therefore I drove him away from me. 29 Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites. 30 Thus I purified the priests and Levites from everything foreign, and I assigned specific duties to each of the priests and Levites. 31 I also arranged for contributions of wood at the appointed times, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, with favor.

I would not live forever. Leave me alone, for my days are but a breath. 17 What is man that You should exalt him, that You should set Your heart upon him, 18 that You attend to him every morning, and test him every moment? 19 Will You never look away from me, or leave me alone to swallow my spittle? 20 If I have sinned, what have I done to You, O watcher of mankind? Let me know why You prosecute me. 3 Does it please You to oppress me, to reject the work of Your hands and favor the schemes of the wicked? 4 Do You have eyes of flesh? Do You see as man sees? 5 Are Your days like those of a mortal, or Your years like those of a man, 6 that You should seek my iniquity and search out my sin— 7 though You know that I am not guilty, and there is no deliverance from Your hand? 8 Your hands shaped me and altogether formed me. Would You now turn and destroy me? 9 Please remember that You molded me like clay. Would You now return me to dust? 10 Did You not pour me out like milk, and curdle me like cheese? 11 You clothed me with skin and flesh, and knit me together with bones and sinews. 12 You have granted me life and loving devotion, and Your care has preserved my spirit. 13 Yet You concealed these things in Your heart, and I know that this was in Your mind: 14 If I sinned, You would take note, and would not acquit me of my iniquity. 15 If I am guilty, woe to me! And even if I am righteous, I cannot lift my head. I am full of shame and aware of my affliction. 16 Should I hold my head high, You would hunt me like a lion, and again display Your power against me. 17 You produce new witnesses against me and multiply Your anger toward me. Hardships assault me in wave after wave. 18 Why then did You bring me from the womb? Oh, that I had died, and no eye had seen me! 19 If only I had never come to be, but had been carried from the womb to the grave. 20 Are my days not few? Withdraw from me, that I may have a little comfort, 21 before I go—never to return— to a land of darkness and gloom, 22 to a land of utter darkness, of deep shadow and disorder, where even the light is like darkness.”

Would You chase after dry chaff? 26 For You record bitter accusations against me and bequeath to me the iniquities of my youth. 27 You put my feet in the stocks and stand watch over all my paths; You set a limit for the soles of my feet. 28 So man wastes away like something rotten, like a moth-eaten garment. 14:1 “Man, who is born of woman, is short of days and full of trouble. 14:2 Like a flower, he comes forth, then withers away; like a fleeting shadow, he does not endure. 14:3 Do You open Your eyes to one like this? Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.” 11 Then I asked: “How long, O Lord?” And He replied: “Until the cities lie ruined and without inhabitant, until the houses are left unoccupied and the land is desolate and ravaged,

O LORD, I will praise You.

Although You were angry with me, Your anger has turned away, and You have comforted me. 2 Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. For the LORD GOD is my strength and my song, and He also has become my salvation.” 3 With joy you will draw water from the springs of salvation, 4 and on that day you will say: “Give praise to the LORD; proclaim His name! Make His works known among the peoples; declare that His name is exalted. 5 Sing to the LORD, for He has done glorious things. Let this be known in all the earth. 6 Cry out and sing, O citizen of Zion, for great among you is the Holy One of Israel.”

Isaiah 25:1–5Isaiah
O LORD, You are my God!
1 O LORD, You are my God! I will exalt You; I will praise Your name. For You have worked wonders— plans formed long ago— in perfect faithfulness. 2 Indeed, You have made the city a heap of rubble, the fortified town a ruin. The fortress of strangers is a city no more; it will never be rebuilt. 3 Therefore, a strong people will honor You. The cities of ruthless nations will revere You. 4 For You have been a refuge for the poor, a stronghold for the needy in distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat. For the breath of the ruthless is like rain against a wall, 5 like heat in a dry land. You subdue the uproar of foreigners. As the shade of a cloud cools the heat, so the song of the ruthless is silenced.

Isaiah 26:1–19Judah, on that day, a song Isaiah gives for that day
We have a strong city; salvation is established as its walls and ramparts.
1 In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: We have a strong city; salvation is established as its walls and ramparts. 2 Open the gates so a righteous nation may enter— one that remains faithful. 3 You will keep in perfect peace the steadfast of mind, because he trusts in You. 4 Trust in the LORD forever, because GOD the LORD is the Rock eternal. 5 For He has humbled those who dwell on high; He lays the lofty city low. He brings it down to the ground; He casts it into the dust. 6 Feet trample it down— the feet of the oppressed, the steps of the poor. 7 The path of the righteous is level; You clear a straight path for the upright. 8 Yes, we wait for You, O LORD; we walk in the path of Your judgments. Your name and renown are the desire of our souls. 9 My soul longs for You in the night; indeed, my spirit seeks You at dawn. For when Your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness. 10 Though grace is shown to the wicked man, he does not learn righteousness. In the land of righteousness he acts unjustly and fails to see the majesty of the LORD. 11 O LORD, Your hand is upraised, but they do not see it. They will see Your zeal for Your people and be put to shame. The fire set for Your enemies will consume them! 12 O LORD, You will establish peace for us. For all that we have accomplished, You have done for us. 13 O LORD our God, other lords besides You have ruled over us, but Your name alone do we confess. 14 The dead will not live; the departed spirits will not rise. Therefore You have punished and destroyed them; You have wiped out all memory of them. 15 You have enlarged the nation, O LORD; You have enlarged the nation. You have gained glory for Yourself; You have extended all the borders of the land. 16 O LORD, they sought You in their distress; when You disciplined them, they poured out a quiet prayer. 17 As a woman with child about to give birth writhes and cries out in pain, so were we in Your presence, O LORD. 18 We were with child; we writhed in pain; but we gave birth to wind. We have given no salvation to the earth, nor brought any life into the world. 19 Your dead will live; their bodies will rise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust! For your dew is like the dew of the morning, and the earth will bring forth her dead.

In the prime of my life I must go through the gates…
10 I said, “In the prime of my life I must go through the gates of Sheol and be deprived of the remainder of my years.” 11 I said, “I will never again see the LORD, even the LORD, in the land of the living; I will no longer look on mankind with those who dwell in this world. 12 My dwelling has been picked up and removed from me like a shepherd’s tent. I have rolled up my life like a weaver; He cuts me off from the loom; from day until night You make an end of me. 13 I composed myself until the morning. Like a lion He breaks all my bones; from day until night You make an end of me. 14 I chirp like a swallow or crane; I moan like a dove. My eyes grow weak as I look upward. O Lord, I am oppressed; be my security.” 15 What can I say? He has spoken to me, and He Himself has done this. I will walk slowly all my years because of the anguish of my soul. 16 O Lord, by such things men live, and in all of them my spirit finds life. You have restored me to health and have let me live. 17 Surely for my own welfare I had such great anguish; but Your love has delivered me from the pit of oblivion, for You have cast all my sins behind Your back. 18 For Sheol cannot thank You; Death cannot praise You. Those who descend to the Pit cannot hope for Your faithfulness. 19 The living, only the living, can thank You, as I do today; fathers will tell their children about Your faithfulness. 20 The LORD will save me; we will play songs on stringed instruments all the days of our lives in the house of the LORD.

I will make known the LORD’s loving devotion and His praiseworthy acts…
7 I will make known the LORD’s loving devotion and His praiseworthy acts, because of all that the LORD has done for us— the many good things for the house of Israel according to His great compassion and loving devotion. 8 For He said, “They are surely My people, sons who will not be disloyal.” So He became their Savior. 9 In all their distress, He too was afflicted, and the Angel of His Presence saved them. In His love and compassion He redeemed them; He lifted them up and carried them all the days of old. 10 But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit. So He turned and became their enemy, and He Himself fought against them. 11 Then His people remembered the days of old, the days of Moses. Where is He who brought them through the sea with the shepherds of His flock? Where is the One who set His Holy Spirit among them, 12 who sent His glorious arm to lead them by the right hand of Moses, who divided the waters before them to gain for Himself everlasting renown, 13 who led them through the depths like a horse in the wilderness, so that they did not stumble? 14 Like cattle going down to the valley, the Spirit of the LORD gave them rest. You led Your people this way to make for Yourself a glorious name. 15 Look down from heaven and see, from Your holy and glorious habitation. Where are Your zeal and might? Your yearning and compassion for me are restrained. 16 Yet You are our Father, though Abraham does not know us and Israel does not acknowledge us. You, O LORD, are our Father; our Redeemer from Everlasting is Your name. 17 Why, O LORD, do You make us stray from Your ways and harden our hearts from fearing You? Return, for the sake of Your servants, the tribes of Your heritage. 18 For a short while Your people possessed Your holy place, but our enemies have trampled Your sanctuary. 19 We have become like those You never ruled, like those not called by Your name. 64:1 If only You would rend the heavens and come down, so that mountains would quake at Your presence, 64:2 as fire kindles the brushwood and causes the water to boil, to make Your name known to Your enemies, so that the nations will tremble at Your presence! 64:3 When You did awesome works that we did not expect, You came down, and the mountains trembled at Your presence. 64:4 From ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides You, who acts on behalf of those who wait for Him. 64:5 You welcome those who gladly do right, who remember Your ways. Surely You were angry, for we sinned. How can we be saved if we remain in our sins? 64:6 Each of us has become like something unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all wither like a leaf, and our iniquities carry us away like the wind. 64:7 No one calls on Your name or strives to take hold of You. For You have hidden Your face from us and delivered us into the hand of our iniquity. 64:8 But now, O LORD, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You are the potter; we are all the work of Your hand. 64:9 Do not be angry, O LORD, beyond measure; do not remember our iniquity forever. Oh, look upon us, we pray; we are all Your people! 64:10 Your holy cities have become a wilderness. Zion has become a wasteland and Jerusalem a desolation. 64:11 Our holy and beautiful temple, where our fathers praised You, has been burned with fire, and all that was dear to us lies in ruins. 64:12 After all this, O LORD, will You restrain Yourself? Will You keep silent and afflict us beyond measure?

Woe to us, for we have sinned! 17 Because of this, our hearts are faint; because of these, our eyes grow dim— 18 because of Mount Zion, which lies desolate, patrolled by foxes. 19 You, O LORD, reign forever; Your throne endures from generation to generation. 20 Why have You forgotten us forever? O, Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant of…
4 And I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed, “O, Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant of loving devotion to those who love Him and keep His commandments, 5 we have sinned and done wrong. We have acted wickedly and rebelled. We have turned away from Your commandments and ordinances. 6 We have not listened to Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings, leaders, fathers, and all the people of the land. 7 To You, O Lord, belongs righteousness, but this day we are covered with shame—the men of Judah, the people of Jerusalem, and all Israel near and far, in all the countries to which You have driven us because of our unfaithfulness to You. 8 O LORD, we are covered with shame—our kings, our leaders, and our fathers—because we have sinned against You. 9 To the Lord our God belong compassion and forgiveness, even though we have rebelled against Him 10 and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God to walk in His laws, which He set before us through His servants the prophets. 11 All Israel has transgressed Your law and turned away, refusing to obey Your voice; so the oath and the curse written in the Law of Moses the servant of God has been poured out on us, because we have sinned against You. 12 You have carried out the words spoken against us and against our rulers by bringing upon us a great disaster. For under all of heaven, nothing has ever been done like what has been done to Jerusalem. 13 Just as it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come upon us, yet we have not sought the favor of the LORD our God by turning from our iniquities and giving attention to Your truth. 14 Therefore the LORD has kept the calamity in store and brought it upon us. For the LORD our God is righteous in all He does; yet we have not obeyed His voice. 15 Now, O Lord our God, who brought Your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and who made for Yourself a name renowned to this day, we have sinned; we have acted wickedly. 16 O Lord, in keeping with all Your righteous acts, I pray that Your anger and wrath may turn away from Your city Jerusalem, Your holy mountain; for because of our sins and the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people are a reproach to all around us. 17 So now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of Your servant. For Your sake, O Lord, cause Your face to shine upon Your desolate sanctuary. 18 Incline Your ear, O my God, and hear; open Your eyes and see the desolation of the city that bears Your name. For we are not presenting our petitions before You because of our righteous acts, but because of Your great compassion. 19 O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act! For Your sake, O my God, do not delay, because Your city and Your people bear Your name.”

From the belly of Sheol I called for help, and You heard my voice. 3 For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current swirled about me; all Your breakers and waves swept over me. 4 At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’ 5 The waters engulfed me to take my life; the watery depths closed around me; the seaweed wrapped around my head. 6 To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me barred me in forever! But You raised my life from the pit, O LORD my God! 7 As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD. My prayer went up to You, to Your holy temple. 8 Those who cling to worthless idols forsake His loving devotion. 9 But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. 14 Shepherd with Your staff Your people, the flock of Your inheritance. They live alone in a woodland, surrounded by pastures. Let them graze in Bashan and Gilead, as in the days of old. 15 As in the days when you came out of Egypt, I will show My wonders. 16 Nations will see and be ashamed, deprived of all their might. They will put their hands over their mouths, and their ears will become deaf. 17 They will lick the dust like a snake, like reptiles slithering on the ground. They will come trembling from their strongholds in the presence of the LORD our God; they will tremble in fear of You. 18 Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity and passes over the transgression of the remnant of His inheritance— who does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in loving devotion? 19 He will again have compassion on us; He will vanquish our iniquities. You will cast out all our sins into the depths of the sea. 20 You will show faithfulness to Jacob and loving devotion to Abraham, as You swore to our fathers from the days of old.

2 How long, O LORD, must I call for help but You do not hear, or cry out to You, “Violence!” but You do not save? 3 Why do You make me see iniquity? Why do You tolerate wrongdoing? For the wicked hem in the righteous, so that justice is perverted.

Are You not from everlasting, O LORD, my God, my Holy One?
12 Are You not from everlasting, O LORD, my God, my Holy One? We will not die. O LORD, You have appointed them to execute judgment; O Rock, You have established them for correction. 13 Your eyes are too pure to look upon evil, and You cannot tolerate wrongdoing. So why do You tolerate the faithless? Why are You silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves? 14 You have made men like the fish of the sea, like creeping things that have no ruler. 15 The foe pulls all of them up with a hook; he catches them in his dragnet, and gathers them in his fishing net; so he rejoices gladly. 16 Therefore he sacrifices to his dragnet and burns incense to his fishing net, for by these things his portion is sumptuous and his food is rich. 17 Will he, therefore, empty his net and continue to slay nations without mercy?

Habakkuk 3:2–19Habakkuk
O LORD, I have heard the report of You; I stand in…
2 O LORD, I have heard the report of You; I stand in awe, O LORD, of Your deeds. Revive them in these years; make them known in these years. In Your wrath, remember mercy! 3 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah His glory covered the heavens, and His praise filled the earth. 4 His radiance was like the sunlight; rays flashed from His hand, where His power is hidden. 5 Plague went before Him, and fever followed in His steps. 6 He stood and measured the earth; He looked and startled the nations; the ancient mountains crumbled; the perpetual hills collapsed. His ways are everlasting. 7 I saw the tents of Cushan in distress; the curtains of Midian were trembling. 8 Were You angry at the rivers, O LORD? Was Your wrath against the streams? Did You rage against the sea when You rode on Your horses, on Your chariots of salvation? 9 You brandished Your bow; You called for many arrows. Selah You split the earth with rivers. 10 The mountains saw You and quaked; torrents of water swept by. The deep roared with its voice and lifted its hands on high. 11 Sun and moon stood still in their places at the flash of Your flying arrows, at the brightness of Your shining spear. 12 You marched across the earth with fury; You threshed the nations in wrath. 13 You went forth for the salvation of Your people, to save Your anointed. You crushed the head of the house of the wicked and stripped him from head to toe. Selah 14 With his own spear You pierced his head, when his warriors stormed out to scatter us, gloating as though ready to secretly devour the weak. 15 You trampled the sea with Your horses, churning the great waters. 16 I heard and trembled within; my lips quivered at the sound. Decay entered my bones; I trembled where I stood. Yet I must wait patiently for the day of distress to come upon the people who invade us. 17 Though the fig tree does not bud and no fruit is on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though the sheep are cut off from the fold and no cattle are in the stalls, 18 yet I will exult in the LORD; I will rejoice in the God of my salvation! 19 GOD the Lord is my strength; He makes my feet like those of a deer; He makes me walk upon the heights! For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments.

Father, the hour has come.

  • Prayers in Jesus's parables. The Pharisee's and the tax collector's prayers (Luke 18:10–14) are in a story he tells.
  • Scripture quoted. When the New Testament quotes a psalm that speaks to God, the words are counted once, in the Psalms.
  • Angels, Satan and the like. Satan's words to God in Job, and the praise of angels and of the altar in Revelation, are not people's prayers.
  • God's own words. When God quotes what people say, or tells a prophet what to say to someone, the words are not a prayer.

How this was made

Spoken to God. The Berean Standard Bible2 capitalizes You and Your when they refer to God. A verse speaks to God when it has that capital after the start of a sentence, or calls on God by name (“O LORD”, “Ah, Lord GOD”, “O my God”, and in the New Testament “Father” and “Lord Jesus”).

Who speaks. Faith Comes By Hearing's verse-by-verse list of who speaks, published with SIL's Glyssen project under the MIT licence1, names the speaker. Where it marks no one, the book's own voice speaks: the prophet in his book, the poet of Lamentations, and Ezra, Nehemiah and Daniel where they write in the first person. Consecutive words of one speaker to God are one prayer, even when God answers in between.

Deciding. Stated rules settle most passages; 173 were decided by hand, each with its reason, and 19 prayers that no rule reaches were added by hand, such as David's “Should I go up?” and the Magnificat. Every question on Questions people ask God falls inside a prayer counted here. This page was made with AI assistance and human review.

The Psalms. A psalm speaks to God when at least one of its verses does. The names in the headings come from the Hebrew text, the Westminster Leningrad Codex3, because the English text on this site leaves the headings out.

The data. Every prayer, psalm, mention and report, and every passage considered and not counted with the reason, is in prayers.json.

Corrections are welcome through the contact page, especially a prayer that is missing.

Questions people ask

How many prayers are there in the Bible?

Using this page's broad definition of prayer, the 66-book Bible records the words of 188 distinct prayers outside the Psalms, or 207 when repeated tellings are counted separately. 110 of the 150 psalms also speak to God, and the text mentions people praying 87 more times without recording their words. Other counts differ because definitions of prayer vary.

What is the longest prayer in the Bible?

Outside the Psalms, the Levites' prayer in Nehemiah 9 (34 verses), then Solomon's at the dedication of the temple (31 verses, 1 Kings 8:23–53). Jesus's longest is John 17 (26 verses). Psalm 119 speaks to God in 165 of its 176 verses.

Who prays the most in the Bible?

Moses, with 18 prayers whose words are given, then Jeremiah with 15 and David with 12, not counting the psalms: David's name heads 73 psalms, and 63 of them speak to God.

What did Jesus pray?

The Gospels give the words of 9 of his prayers, counting the Lord's Prayer, which he teaches his disciples: his thanks to the Father for revealing things to little children, his prayers at Lazarus's tomb and in John 12, the long prayer of John 17, Gethsemane, and three from the cross. The Bible mentions him praying in 25 more verses without giving the words, among them the blessings and thanks he gives over bread.

Are the Psalms prayers?

Many are. 110 of the 150 psalms speak to God in at least one verse, 842 verses in all; the rest speak about God or to the reader. This page analyzes the Psalms separately because they form a large collection of speech addressed to God.
