Bible verses for strength

Fourteen verses for courage and hard days, shortest first. In the Bible, strength is received more than summoned; every command to be strong comes with a reason standing behind it.

Every verse below is quoted from the Berean Standard Bible with a line of context. Pick a short one and learn it by heart in about five days; a hard day is easier to stand through with a verse that is already standing in you.
I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.
The most memorized strength verse in the Bible, written by Paul from prison, about contentment in every circumstance.
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.
The opening of the armor-of-God passage. The location of the strength, in the Lord, is the whole point.
Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.
Spoken to a weeping crowd at the public reading of the Law. Joy as load-bearing structure, not decoration.
It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way clear.
David's victory song, sung after years of being hunted. The arming happened during the hard years, not after them.
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble.
The psalm behind the hymn A Mighty Fortress. Refuge for hiding in, strength for walking out with.
Be on the alert. Stand firm in the faith. Be men of courage. Be strong.
Four short commands, drumbeat style, at the close of a long letter. Easy to memorize; harder to outgrow.
GOD the Lord is my strength; He makes my feet like those of a deer; He makes me walk upon the heights!
The last line of a book that opens with complaint. Habakkuk's circumstances have not changed by this verse; his footing has.
The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life— whom shall I dread?
Two questions that expect the answer no one. The psalm goes on to name real enemies; the questions still stand.
Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.
Spoken to Joshua as he took over from Moses, facing a job he did not choose. Courage commanded, and then resourced.
The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped. Therefore my heart rejoices, and I give thanks to Him with my song.
Strength and shield: power for the task and protection in it. The verse pivots from need to thanks in a single breath.
Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid or terrified of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.
Moses' charge to all Israel at the Jordan, later quoted in Hebrews 13:5. The never-leave promise is the ground under the command.
The LORD is my strength and my song, and He has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise Him, my father’s God, and I will exalt Him.
From the song at the Red Sea, the oldest hymn in the Bible, sung on the far shore of an impossible situation.
But those who wait upon the LORD will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.
The classic for endurance. Note the descent: soaring, then running, then walking, and the promise holds at every altitude.
But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me.
God's answer to a prayer He declined three times. The strangest and deepest strength verse: power perfected in weakness, not despite it.
Word counts use this site's counting rule in the Berean Standard Bible. Nehemiah 8:10 is quoted in part (the verse opens with the feast instructions), and Habakkuk 3:19 without its closing musical note. Each reference links to the verse in its chapter.
Strength you can recite
These verses were written to be carried: Israel sang Exodus 15 on the march, and Joshua 1:9 was given for the moments ahead, not the scroll. The five-step method puts one in your memory in about five days, a few minutes at a time. Philippians 4:13 or Ephesians 6:10, at eleven words each, are the natural first picks.
Questions
What is a good Bible verse for strength?
Philippians 4:13 is the most famous: I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. Isaiah 40:31 is the classic for endurance, and Joshua 1:9 for courage before something hard.
What does the Bible say about being strong?
In the Bible, strength is received more than summoned. The commands to be strong almost always come with a reason outside the person: be strong and courageous, for the LORD your God goes with you. Paul goes furthest in 2 Corinthians 12:9, where God's power is made perfect not alongside weakness but in it.
Which of these verses should I memorize first?
Start with the shortest: Philippians 4:13 or Ephesians 6:10, both eleven words. A few minutes a day for five days is enough with the five-step method: hear it aloud, say it while words hide a few at a time, and finish by reciting it from memory.

The words don't need to match exactly, just type what you remember.
